Perfect Stranger stars Halle Berry as investigative reporter Rowena Price, who along with her friend Miles Haley ( Giovani Ribisi ) work at the New York Enquirer. The film starts off with Rowena Price working on an expose of a government senator which gets quashed, and she resigns from her post in protest. On her way home she meets her childhood friend Grace Clayton, who asks her too do a similar peice on Harrison Hill ( Bruce Willis ) a wealthy advertising executive.

Some days later, Grace`s mom calls Rowena and we find out that she is missing. Rowena starts the search in the city mourges and finds Grace`s brutalised body...after which she decides to go after Hill as her next big scoop. Enlisting the help of Miles, she goes undercover as temp, and tries to get in close to Hill. In this backdrop the story continues, eventually in the end revealing who actually murdered Grace.


Over at Imdb, this movie is being berated as being complete trash, which is why I am now seeing it nearly a year after I had first bought its DVD. However in my own opinion, its not so bad. Writing is sloppy at certain junctures as is the direction. On the acting front Halley Berry is given way too much screen time, while the supposed antagonist Bruce Willis is wasted. His character, Harrison Hill should have been more interwined in the story to keep the flow a little better. Plus, there are a whole bunch of times in the movie you are forced to laugh at the stupidity of the characters on screen...small mistakes that spoil the movie and could have easily been done away with had the writing been a little better.

Having said that, I did find this movie watchable and as i said before, it is not all that bad as its made out to be. Its no usual suspects, but then again how many movies are :-D...so in conclusion, not a must watch..but rather a "can watch" film in my opinion

Madagascar 2 , sequel to 2005`s Madagascar, stars Ben Stiller, David Schwimmer etc who reprise there roles as the escaped animals from new york zoo. This time, we take a peak at Alex the lions past and see how he made his journey from an animal reserve in Africa to the Dancing King of New York Zoo.

The film starts off with our animal friends boarding a plane flown by the penguins. Midway, the plane falters, loses its engines, and the penguins are forced to crash land in a place none other than Africa. There Alex is reunited with his parents while the others find serenity in others of there kind. Alex`s father Zuba ( played by the late Bernie Mac ) is overjoyed at finding out that Alex is the King of Newyork....its only later that he finds out that the King of NewYork is actually the "Dance King of Newyork".....and in this context the story unfolds.


Acting, Story and direction wise I found this much better than Madagascar 1. All characters are given good screen time and there own stories are developed along side Alex the lion. The laughs are also quite a lot, and one does feel more connected to the plot for this as compared too its predecessor. So a solid 7.5/10 from me :)

Paul Greengrass ( Director of the Bourne series )brings us a harrowing dramatisation of the events that unfolded on Sunday, the 30th of January 1972 in Derry, Ireland. Set against the backdrop of IRA vs British Army violence, Bloody Sunday is an epic tale of how human beings become savage animals by total disdain for life.

James Nesbitt, plays Ivan Cooper MP for the Derry area, and leader of the Irish Civil Rights movement under whos supervision a peacefull demonstration is announced......to protest against illegal internment of suspected terrorists. The film starts off with both Cooper and Major General Ford ( Tim-Piggot Smith ) holding press conferences. While Cooper vociferously states the march will go on, Ford does what all millitary men in his position do, and disallows the march... claiming that the current security situation doesnot merit such a large congregation of people.

There on, the film follows Cooper as he tries to persuade people to join the march, also trying to dissuade the IRA from disrupting it. Ford and his accomplasis , meanwhile are trying to contain the march, while frustrated slodiers are shown talking in disgust at what there colleagues have had to suffer at the hands of the Irish terrorists. In this the film continues to its tragic ending.

The British Army shoots and kills 13 protestors upon which Cooper says these memorable words:

" I just want to say this to the British Government... You know what you've just done, don't you? You've destroyed the civil rights movement, and you've given the IRA the biggest victory it will ever have. All over this city tonight, young men... boys will be joining the IRA, and you will reap a whirlwind. "


And true enough, IRA had a surge in membership and popularity after these events and the British Government reaps a "whirlwind" in the years too come.


The best part about this film was the fact that Greengrass has tried to show the action in real time. As a result the viewer feels that they too are witness to every event, whether its Cooper handing out pamphlets of the march or when bullets start flying near the end of the film, and the bodies start falling. This is thus, what makes this film special. Also, if u look at the BBC footage
from that time, Greengrass has made quite an accurate replica in his film.

Thus a true classic has been made, and this by no means is anything less than an extra ordinary "must watch" peace of matinee. It thus gets a well deserved 8/10 from me :-)

Lakeview Terrace stars Samuel L Jackson, as police officer Abel Turner, a pissed off widower who lives with his two children raising them on his own. Turner is a no nonsense strict father who routinely corrects his children's grammar and tries to instill a sense of "moral upbringing" in them...to a point that he hits his daughter for disobeying him.

Next door move in Chris and Lisa Mattson ( Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington ) and inter-racial couple, which ticks off Turner. From there on he begins to harass the Mattson`s and even berates them in front of there guests. And henceforth this film becomes nothing more than a "tragic" version of Ben Stillers Duplex.

Abel Turners character is shown as a complicated individual. You cant make up your mind whether to root for him or curse him. There are times where he is shown to be an upright, morally high standing individual and at other times his darker side comes out and you just wish a lightening bolt struck him and killed him instantly. He for example gets along well with his Chinese, and white neighbours but is a constant pain for Chris and Lisa. Its difficult for the viewer to make up there mind whether the guy is a scum racist or is angry because of the situation hes fallen in after his wife died.

As for the protagonists, Chris Mattson seems to be almost at boiling point, but just as you think hes about to take a swing at Turner, he backs off quietly. His wife Lisa, is of similar demeanour as well. Apart from a crazy ass neighbour there own families are also not over joyed at there inter-racial marriage and this aspect is also delved into as a sub plot in the film.


Acting wise, Samuel L Jackson carries this movie solely on his shoulders. Patrick Wilson and Kerry Washington do try too measure up, but fall short as the intensity is missing. Its there, but it never really comes out. Even in the ending, which is quite dramatic in nature, the viewers are not really sucked into the film as they should have been. A good film has you putting yourself in the shoes of the characters, especially in the endings...but here one seems to be viewing from a distance, the events unfolding outside the Mattson`s house in the end of the flick.

Final result is thus 6/10. The movie is watchable but its certainly not a "drop all things and immediately watch this" type of film.

VHSrip with hardcoded english subs for urdu dialogs

"The Blood of Hussein" is Jamil Dehlavis much talked about Pro democracy, anti dictatorship film which was supposedly banned by HRH Zia ul Haq. Before Dehlavi could release it martial law was enacted by Zia which forced him to run away to the UK and release it there under patronship of the Channel 4.

The Film is a dramatisation of the tragic story of Karbala, which happened more than a millennium ago and has been forever entrenched in history as the epitome of a struggle against dictatorial rule. Where as the event itself is awe inspiring and motivational, the film however falls far short from being inspiring, let alone watchable.
Dehlavi seemed confused whether he wants to follow the desi version of movie making or the hollywood style. In the former, the film is painfully slow but is 3 hours long during which the director gets enough time to tell the story of the film as well. The latter, ie the Hollywood version is fast paced 1.5-2 hours long where the film is succinct and to the point and rarely tortures the viewer for being excruciatingly sluggish. Dehlavi tries to do both , the first hour is torturous and makes you regret having wasted 60 precious minutes of your life, and when the real story begins past that mark then your mind has already wandered so much that it is difficult too connect with the characters in the movie.

Story wise the movie, is one could say, farely ok. But given the significance of the event that they were trying to re-enact I felt that perhaps it could have been better in this aspect as well. The Blood of Hussein revolves around two brothers, Salim and Hussein. Hussein is a real peoples man, living among the peasants and not being pompous about his upper class origins. The other, Salim, is a bureaucrat working for the military government and can be thought of as a 70s portrayal of Pakistan's Prime minister, Shaukat Aziz, under Pervaiz Musharraf post 2002.
In this backdrop, the battle lines of the story are drawn as the military vs the people with Hussein and Salim picking there respective sides. But with dehlavi wasting a lot of precious time in a subplot where Salims wife is cheating on him with an army major, there is hardly any time left for the viewer to connect with the protagonist of the story. Consequently the heroism displayed by him is fantastic but is not enough to inspire.


Thus, the director hardly does justice to the movie or to the event that they were trying to portray and for being an anti dictator movie it fails in every aspect to move the viewer, like films such as V for Vendetta did. Besides, I suppose this movie would have been banned regardless of its "message" for it contains nude scenes. I personally give it 4/10 and cant imagine how its rated anything more than this.
