Solid Mamet with Ejiofor at his best, 8 October 2008
Heavily influenced by "man with no name" films and film noir, Redbelt is a very entertaining and captivating film.
Jujitsu master Mike Terry is a man of principle and he doesn't think too highly of competition ("competition is weakening") which is why he ignores the calls for him to join the upcoming mixed martial arts competition. But when Mike finds himself over his head in debt and law troubles, entering a big money mixed martial arts competition suddenly becomes much more than pride and money, it becomes a real fight for survival.
The story is very absorbing, but the film is elevated even more by the superb performances throughout. There are too many memorable supporting performances to name - though Emily Mortimer and Tim Allen really stand out - and Chiwetel Ejiofor has never been better than he is in this film as Mike Terry. Carefully formed with intelligence and precision by writer/director David Mamet, Redbelt is a highly entertaining moral tale.
