Creepy British motorway thriller..., 6 October 2008
8/10
Author: Hanno Schnabel from Germany

An average couple speed down an English motorway in the rain at night. The girl is sick of the guy and ready to break up with him. The guy is oblivious, caught up in his temporary job putting up posters in service stations, but wanting to be a writer.

Suddenly he's screeching to a halt and his girlfriend wakes up- he's seen something terrible happening, he thinks, in the truck in front. The police are no help so he ignores it and carries on with his night-job, and arguing with his girlfriend.

I saw this British thriller at the FilmFest in Stuttgart, and as the film began, I wasn't sure how much I liked these characters who were arguing so much. But suddenly events are turned on their head as the girlfriend goes missing, and the boyfriend - who up til now I had thought was a loser - has to find her and take on a very real form of evil. He is alone in this and no-one can help him- encounters with other people invariably lead to more problems.

This aspect of the film made it stand out as a classic thriller, where the threat is human and real, where the protagonist is desperately trying to find his partner and at the same time exonerate himself. In making this one man's quest and avoiding outright horror, first time director Mark Tonderai has made a solid high-tension film with a lot of details and not a lot of gimmicks. Helped by the great night photography that at times reminded me of 'Collateral', and an excellent Score that pumps and soars along with the protagonists highs and lows, Hush was a film that went beyond what I expected from a low budget feature and so was one of my favourites at the FFF along with the more horror-tinge 'Eden Lake' also from England.

Although I did not recognize any actors in the film, all turned very convincing performances (although accents were to me sometimes strange) and on seeing the credits the faceless 'bad guy' Andreas Wisniewski has played many such roles and was also excellent! A neat, well made thriller that does not need the twists, gimmicks, high budget that is traditional in the genre.
